Google Wallet’s helpful new feature is perfect for power users

While digital wallet apps like Google Wallet and Apple Wallet are incredibly convenient and have, in many cases, replaced people’s physical wallets, I’ve noticed over the years that my digital wallet is becoming just as cluttered with bank cards, gift cards, tickets, and more, as my old pocket wallet, that it can be hard to sort through it.

It seems Google has taken notice of the problem that I have, and likely many others. With its latest Google Wallet update, it is adding the ability to give nicknames to passes in your wallet, to make it easier to sift through the mountain of digital passes you may have.

So, for example, if you have a loyalty card for a coffee shop in your Google Wallet, you can now add a nickname to it, up to 25 characters long. This nickname will appear under it when you’re scrolling through your passes, in an attempt to make it easier for you to find.

How to add a nickname to a pass in Google Wallet

The new nickname feature isn’t perfect

If you want to add a nickname to one of your digital passes in Google Wallet, like loyalty cards, event tickets, or transit passes, it’s incredibly simple. Here’s how:

1. Open a digital pass in Google Wallet.

2. Tap the three dots in the top-right corner of the pass screen.

3. Select Edit nickname.

4. Type a nickname for your pass, up to 25 characters long.

5. Hit Save.

If you don’t see the ability to add a nickname to a pass in Google Wallet, make sure your app is up-to-date. I see the feature on my Galaxy S25+, running the latest version of Google Wallet (v. 25.40.814107481) and One UI 8.

While I appreciate that Google added a nickname feature to digital passes in Google Wallet, I find it somewhat flawed because the nickname only appears alongside the card’s original name when you open Google Wallet, instead of replacing the entire name. I believe it would be much more useful if the nickname actually replaced the entire card name, as it would be easier to spot. Hopefully, Google will make that change in the future.

This new nickname feature isn’t the only change Google has made to its wallet app lately. It recently added its Material 3 Expressive redesign to Google Wallet, which includes UI improvements and a visual refresh to the app.
